Thy Kingdom Come | School of Prayer

Developing our Prayer life

Prayer is at the heart of the Christian life. There is sometimes a lot of mystery about prayer. And while prayer is an art - something we need to learn, discipline ourselves in, and practice for the rest of our lives - it is also at the same time the simplest, easiest and most natural thing that we do as those who believe in God. Prayer is simply talking to and, just as importantly, listening to God.

This week of activities around prayer has been designed to help us deepen our prayer life, learn new ideas and techniques and come together as parishes and as a Team to create a deeper sense of prayer.

We hope you will:

  • join us for the different training sessions
  • join us for Evening Prayer at 5.30pm each weekday, in church or wherever you are
  • refresh your prayer life
  • recommit to praying for the mission and ministry of our Wythenshawe parishes.

On this page you will find a diary of events.
Wythenshawe School of Prayer Programme

Introduction to Prayer
  • Sunday 2nd June, 5pm at William Temple Church
  • Monday 3rd June, 2pm at William Temple Church
An introduction to prayer and praying with a chance to explore what we find helpful and what we struggle with. One session repeated over two days.

Introduction to Ignatian Prayer
  • Tuesday 4th June, 7.30pm at William Temple Church
A chance to find out more about Ignatian prayer, which draws on human imagination and emotions to help us to connect with God, recognise God's action in our lives and to use prayer to inform our decisions.  It will include a chance to try imaginative prayer using a passage from scripture, and an introduction to the Examen - a form of prayer which St Ignatius Loyola considered to be of great importance.

Praying the Lord’s Prayer
  • Wednesday 5th June, 7.30pm at St Richard’s Church
The prayer which Jesus taught us is a starting point for all Christian prayer and in this session we explore how we can deepen our understanding of the Our Father.

Introduction to Silent Prayer
  • Thursday 6th June, 7.30pm at William Temple Church
A simple experiential introduction to silent prayer- centering prayer and the Carmelite prayer of recollection. Resting in the loving gaze of God.

Introduction to Charismatic Prayer
  • Friday 7th June, 3pm at St Luke’s Church
“Charismatic” prayer can sound high-powered - it’s simply prayer with a greater emphasis on letting the Spirit lead. And the Spirit can be quiet as well as Pentecost-noisy. Come and have a go!
